With international travel beginning to pick up again, it is a good time to provide an update on the current regulations and the travel cover that UMAL provides.

In terms of the travel cover, we continue to provide cover under the Medical Expenses section for claims arising out of Covid-19. Claims under the Disruption section (Cancellation, Curtailment, Rearrangement etc) arising out of Covid-19 are however excluded.

As always, travel should be suitably risk assessed and authorised at appropriate levels within the institution. UMAL travellers have access to detailed country risk information provided by Crisis24. For information on accessing their services, please see the Travel Hub on the UMAL website – https://umal.co.uk/travel-hub/pre-travel-advice/

When booking travel, please ensure that you allow ample time to obtain any documentation such as visas that you will require. A combination of the pandemic and the impact of Brexit has significantly altered the landscape with regard to overseas travel from the UK and it may now take much longer than previously to make all necessary arrangements.

With regard to regulations, the remaining seven countries were removed from the UK Government’s red list from 1st November 2021. Technically the red list remains in place and there are rules for travel to and from countries on that list but at the time of writing, there are no countries on the list.

The government now has a foreign travel checklist, which advises all travellers to:

  1. Check foreign travel advice for the countries you want to go to https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice
  2. Arrange any COVID-19 tests you will need to enter the countries that you will travel to
  3. Find out how you can use the NHS COVID Pass to prove your vaccination status abroad
  4. Check what you will need to do when you return to England – https://www.gov.uk/guidance/travel-to-england-from-another-country-during-coronavirus-covid-19

The above guidance relates to England only. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are subject to different regulations. Guidance for international travel to and from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can be found at the following links:
